Department of Art
The Department of Art at Auburn University is a vibrant community of artists and scholars. We are dedicated to teaching and mentoring students. Small class sizes - none over 18 students and some with 12-15 students - allow faculty to work closely with students and guide them in developing individual artistic approaches and areas of inquiry. In an atmosphere where experimentation, innovation, creative inquiry, critical thinking and scholarship are encouraged, students are challenged to excel.
In addition to a wide-range of studio course work, all majors take introductory survey and period courses in Art History. This instills knowledge of significant achievements of major artists and movements and an understanding of the discursive nature of art history. All majors are provided a well-rounded general education by the required University Core Curriculum, which seeks to develop a student’s analytical skills and ability to communicate, and to encourage an appreciation for their culture and world.
