The Tasman String Quartet: Outreach Residency

The Daniel F. Breeden Eminent Scholar was established in 1989 to provide support for both the academic and the outreach missions of the College of Liberal Arts. The chair is supported by an endowment from Dr. Daniel F. Breeden.

The 2009 Breeden Scholar is Dr. Howard Goldstein, a professor in the College of Liberal Arts Music Department. As part of his appointment, he will coordinate a wide variety of performances, classroom instruction and outreach activities for the Tasman String Quartet, which will be in residence at Auburn University from February 15 through March 15, 2009.

Biographies

 

Jennifer Banks B.Mus Otago, M.M. New England Conservatory

  

Jennifer started playing the violin at the age of four in Alexandra, New Zealand and completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Otago and the University of Toronto. She recently completed her M.M. with world-renowned violinist Miriam Fried at the New England Conservatory in Boston.

Jennifer is an experienced soloist, having played numerous solo recitals and concerti, including performances with the Southern Sinfonia for their 'Last Night of the Proms', the Nelson Symphony, the University of Toronto Symphony and the New Zealand School of Music Orchestra as the winner of the concerto competitions at both of these institutions.

A passionate chamber musician, she was a violinist in the Amygdala quartet – resident graduate string quartet at the New Zealand School of music in 2005. In 2006, her piano trio received the University of Toronto's highest honour for chamber music, the Felix Galimir Award, resulting in successful debuts in Toronto and at the 2006 Banff Summer Arts Festival.

She has also been concertmaster of the Banff Festival Orchestra, a member of the Gardner Chamber Orchestra in Boston and part of the first violin section of the Boston Philharmonic. Recently, she performed at the Sarasota Music Festival in Florida. Jennifer has been a recipient of the NZSO Alex Lindsay Memorial Award as well as a Creative New Zealand grant and the P.E.O. International Peace Scholarship. She is also an accomplished singer and toured Europe and Russia with the award-winning Tower New Zealand Youth Choir conducted by Karen Grylls.

  

Anna van der Zee, violin 1 B.Mus (Hons) Victoria, Künstlerische Reifeprüfung Detmold

   

Anna van der Zee grew up in Paeroa, New Zealand and studied with Douglas Beilman at Victoria University of Wellington, gaining her Bachelor of Music with First Class Honours in 2000. She went on to Germany to study at the Hochschule für Musik in Detmold with renowned violinist Ulrike-Anima Mathé. Anna won several scholarships including the Barbara Finlayson Scholarship (Victoria University Foundation) for two consecutive years and a DAAD Scholarship from the German Government. Anna has been concertmaster of the University Orchestra in Wellington, the Hochschule Orchestra in Detmold, University of Colorado at Boulder Symphony and Chamber Orchestras and on occasion acting concertmaster of the New Zealand Symphony. During her time in Germany, Anna was an intern in the North German Radio Orchestra. She has also performed as a soloist with orchestras in the concertos of Mozart, Sibelius, Vivaldi, Bach and Mendelssohn and has performed in chamber music groups and orchestras in France, Italy, Germany, Spain, the Netherlands, China, Japan, and New Zealand.

 

 

 

 

Miranda Wilson, cello Mus.B Canterbury, M.Mus London, D.M.A. Texas

                

Miranda Wilson was was born in Wellington, New Zealand. She made her soloist debut at the age of 16, when she was invited to perform Elgar's Cello Concerto with the Wellington Sinfonia (now the Vector Wellington Orchestra). She was also principal cellist of the New Zealand National Youth Orchestra. Following undergraduate studies at the University of Canterbury, New Zealand, she took a Master of Music degree at Goldsmiths' College, University of London, graduating with Distinction. She then moved to Austin, Texas, where she completed a doctorate at the University of Texas, with the support of a Fulbright Scholarship and an International Peace Scholarship. Her principal teachers were Natalia Pavlutskaya and Alexander Ivashkin, Phyllis Young, Judith Glyde and András Fejér. She has a strong interest in musicology, and has published scholarly articles on Shostakovich and given papers at musicological conferences in Britain and America. She has performed as a soloist, chamber musician and orchestral player in New Zealand, Britain, America, the Middle East and Asia, and participated in the Chandos recording of Sofia Gubaidulina’s cello works. 

 

 

 

Christiaan van der Zee, viola B.Mus (Hons) Victoria, Künstlerische Reifeprüfung Detmold

   

Christiaan van der Zee was born in South Africa where he received his first violin lessons at the age of 7. In 1998 he began his studies in Stellenbosch, South Africa. At the end of that year he immigrated to New Zealand and under the guidance of Gillian Ansell completed his Bachelor of Music with First Class Honours at Victoria University of Wellington in 2001. During his time at Victoria, he started playing the viola and found a great affinity with the instrument. In 2001 he was principal violist with the New Zealand National Youth Orchestra. Various scholarships include the Barbara Finlayson Scholarship for overseas study from Victoria University (for three years running) and the Alex Lindsay Memorial Award from the New Zealand National Youth Orchestra. These enabled Chris to continue his studies in Germany under the distinguished violists Nobuko Imai and Diemut Poppen. In recent years, he has performed extensively as a soloist, in chamber music, as well as in various orchestras and chamber orchestras in Germany, The Netherlands, Italy, New Zealand, South Africa, Taiwan and China.
