College of Liberal Arts Scholarships

Scholarships may be awarded at the University, the College, or the Departmental level. The College of Liberal Arts also offers scholarships to students who are members of the Pre-Law program. Each kind of scholarship requires a separate application.

Scholarships available to all College of Liberal Arts Students

There are three kinds of competitive College of Liberal Arts Scholarships for which all CLA undergraduates may apply.

  • General Academic Scholarships
  • Academic Enrichment Scholarships
  • Opportunities for Undergraduate Research in CLA Fellowships

General Academic Scholarships

Description:
CLA provides a number of scholarships to help defray the tuition and fees cost for selected students. The number of these awards and their exact dollar amounts vary from year to year. Selection criteria for these awards depend on the wishes of the donors who established them, but many require students to have demonstrated financial need as well as outstanding academic credentials. Many are also restricted to students who are residents of Alabama.

Application and Deadline Information:

To apply for a CLA general academic scholarship, you need to complete an online application. Applications will be accepted by January 31 for preferred consideration; applications will be accepted from February 19 until April 1 for secondround awards. These deadlines apply to both current and incoming (first-year and transfer) students.

Academic Enrichment Scholarships

Description:
Beginning in the 2008-09 academic year, the College of Liberal Arts will institute a competitive program to provide up to $3000 to CLA students who are enrolling in study abroad programs or who are engaging in an extensive unpaid internship which is closely related to their career goals. To be eligible to apply, students must have completed at least 30 credit hours at Auburn and have an unadjusted cum GPA of at least 3.0.

Application and Deadline Information:
To apply for a CLA Academic Enrichment scholarship, you need to complete an online application. Applications are due August 1, 2009, for programs beginning Fall 2009; November 1, 2009, for programs beginning January 1, 2010; and, March 1 for programs beginning May 16, 2010.

Opportunities in Undergraduate Research in CLA (OURCLA) Fellowships

Description:
The OURCLA fellowship program awards students $1500 to undertake a semester-long research project under the supervision of a faculty mentor. OURCLA students are also eligible to apply for up to $1000 to support student travel to present the results of their research at a national conference; faculty mentors may also apply for up to $1000 to support professional travel or project-related supplies.

Application and Deadline Information:
To apply for an OURCLA fellowship, each student and mentor pair complete an online application. Applications are reviewed by the College of Liberal Arts Scholarship Committee. If selected for an award, the student receives half of the award at the beginning of the term and the remaining half when the faculty member confirms that the project has been successfully completed. Students who do not complete their project within the semester will not receive the remainder of their award. Applications are due August 1, 2009, for the Fall 2009 semester; November 1, 2009, for the Spring 2010 semester; and, March 1 for Summer 2010 projects.

Pre-Law Scholarships

Students interested in attending law school after completion of the bachelor's degree are encouraged to apply for a prelaw scholarship. Special applications for the Auburn University Bar PreLaw Scholars Program and the Morris Savage PreLaw Scholarship may be obtained from Dorothy WellsLittleton, PractitionerinResidence, 7002 Haley Center, Auburn University, AL 368495223.

CLA Department-level Scholarships

Many individual departments within CLA have endowed scholarships for students who have demonstrated academic excellence within their major. Some may have limited scholarship opportunities for incoming students of exceptional promise. Students should contact the Undergraduate Studies Coordinator or Department Chair in their major to discuss any scholarship opportunities that may be available to students in their undergraduate major program of study

AU Scholarship Honors Pulitzer Prize Winner

Cynthia TuckerAUBURN – Auburn University recently received a $100,000 endowed gift from the James M. Cox Foundation in honor of Cynthia Tucker. A 1976 graduate of AU, Tucker was recognized with a Pulitzer Prize for Commentary in 2007 for “her courageous, clear-headed columns that evince a strong sense of morality and persuasive knowledge of the community.” She is currently the editorial page editor at The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

The endowment will provide scholarships for students in the journalism program in AU’s College of Liberal Arts. Known as the Cynthia Tucker ’76 Endowed Scholarship for Journalism Excellence, the gift strives to increase the level of diversity in the journalism program.

New Scholarship Possibilities

The College of Liberal Arts is pleased to announce two new undergraduate scholarship programs that are intended to help students find their place in the world.

1. The Opportunities for Undergraduate Research in CLA (OURCLA) initiative is a competitive program which awards students $1500 to undertake a semester-long research project under the supervision of a faculty mentor. OURCLA students are also eligible to apply for up to $1000 to support student travel to present the results of their research at a national conference; faculty mentors may also apply for up to $1000 to support professional travel or project-related supplies.

Student Eligibility: Eligible students will have a minimum ungapped cum GPA of 3.0, have completed a minimum of 30 hrs of coursework at Auburn, and should be proposing a project related to their major or career goals. Students should be prepared to spend the amount of time equivalent to an intensive experiential learning/practicum or for a 3 credit course that has 6 hours of laboratory.

Mentor Eligibility: Faculty mentors will be tenure-track faculty who are willing to meet for 1 hour/week with the undergraduate student to help guide the student on his or her project. Mentors may not use the students primarily to promote their own research projects, though certainly the students’ project may dovetail with the faculty members’ ongoing research.

Administration: Student and faculty member file a joint application to the Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs by the appropriate deadline. (Please note that two brief letters of recommendation from faculty members are required.) Applications are reviewed by the College of Liberal Arts Scholarship Committee. If selected for an award, the student receives half of the award at the beginning of the term (through the Banner scholarship administration system) and the remaining half when the faculty member confirms with the Senior Associate Dean that the project has been successfully completed. Students who do not complete their project within the semester will not receive the remainder of their award.
