Susan D'Antoni
The first president of the Auburn University Health Administration Alumni Organization, Susan D'Antoni is largely responsible for the coordination of the organization's Education Conference, to be held February 26-27th at the Hotel and Conference Center.
Though working full-time in Washington, DC as the executive director of the Montgomery County Medical Society, D'Antoni has played a significant part in planning the conference. "I love my work with Auburn…I bleed orange and blue," said D'Antoni.
A Hurricane Katrina survivor, D'Antoni moved to Washington, DC shortly after the disaster with her family to begin rebuilding their lives. "The very first thing I did when I got here was look for the Auburn [Alumni] chapter because I knew that those Auburn people would be so warm and welcoming, and they were," said D'Antoni.
With a successful career in association management, D'Antoni credits her Auburn education with providing the necessary skills for her future. "What the Auburn program did," she said, "was expose me to enough different areas of health administration that I could see that I would have an interest in association management. [The HA program] requires you to wear many hats. You have to know a little bit about almost everything."
"This is really cheesy, but the Auburn creed says it all. When you meet another Auburn person, you know that they are going to be just like that. So when you read the Auburn creed, and you know that you represent those sorts of skills, abilities, values, then you can enter a field like this and be able to succeed almost immediately… I think that that's why I've done very well," said D'Antoni.
Since finding her niche in association management, D'Antoni has become a mentor for many Health Administration students and graduates looking for work. Recently, she hired an Auburn grad to work for her in Washington because she "knew what she would be made of."
D'Antoni's high regard for her Auburn experience has also led her daughter to consider the school. "I'm hopeful that she will come to Auburn," she admitted, " I think that CLA would be a wonderful home for her and inspire her to do all those things that she is already very interested in."
