Promoting Excellence in Teaching and Learning (PETL)

The College of Liberal Arts established the Teaching Effectiveness Committee in 1989 to recognize its outstanding teachers. In 2002, the Teaching Effectiveness Committee was replaced by a new committee, the Promotion of Excellence in Teaching and Learning committee (PETL), which was given an expanded charge. In addition to overseeing and broadening the CLA’s Teaching Award program, it also was given responsibility for developing and implementing teaching enhancement activities throughout the college, either as stand-alone activities or cosponsored with the newly formed Biggio Center for Enhancement of Teaching and Learning (which was established in 2003).

This year’s PETL Award will be held in conjunction with the CLA Spring Reception.

PETL Committee Members

At present, PETL sponsors monthly Teaching Enhancement Activities (TEAs) during the regular academic year. The TEAs focus on issues related to developing and refining basic skills and are given in either a presentation or workshop format.

PETL also sponsors the CLA’s extensive teaching awards program and recognizes exemplary teaching in the following areas:
The Graduate Teaching Assistant Award is given to an outstanding GTA in any CLA department.
The Instructional Excellence Award is given to an outstanding part-time or affiliate faculty in any CLA department.
The Early Career Teaching Award is given to an untenured faculty member in any CLA department.
The Teaching Award in the Humanities is given to a tenured faculty member in English, Foreign Languages and Literatures, History, or Philosophy.
The Teaching Award in Communication Sciences and Social Sciences is given to a tenured faculty member in Communication and Journalism, Communication Disorders, Political Science, Psychology, or Sociology, Anthropology, and Social Work.
The Teaching Award in Fine Arts is given to a tenured faculty member in Art, Music, or Theatre.
The Advising Award in the College of Liberal Arts is given to a tenure-track or tenured faculty member in any CLA department who demonstrates excellence in undergraduate advising. This award is selected by the Dean’s advisors.

Each award consists of a $1,000 check and a plaque, which is presented during the College of Liberal Arts Awards Ceremony. Each awardee’s name is also placed on the perpetuity plaques located outside the dean’s office.

In 2002, PETL established the CLA Academy of Teaching and Outstanding Teachers to recognize individuals who have made outstanding or otherwise significant contributions of lasting impact to the undergraduate teaching mission of the College of Liberal Arts and Auburn University. Membership in the Academy is lifetime.
