CLA Day

High School Outreach: The "CLA Day"

CLA DayCLA Day TigerThe College of Liberal Arts hosted its first CLA Day for high school students April 19, 2004. The next days will be on April 15 and April 17, 2008.

Purpose of the program: To invite young minority and disadvantaged students on campus for a day to get the college experience. These students come from the surrounding Lee county area and other neighboring rural counties in Alabama. The program is catered currently for juniors in high schools but will be transitioning to the freshmen and sophomore status in the future.

What do students do on the "CLA Day"?
Students are given a class schedule and itinerary upon their arrival for registration. Classes are determined by the students when they pre-select classes of their first and second choice.
Students attend breakfast and are given an introduction of the CLA Deans and Academic Advisors.
Students then proceed to attend classes that are listed on their schedules. During lunch, students will have the chance to listen to a keynote speaker. A tour is given to the student of major buildings located on campus. Afternoon sessions consist of representatives from the admissions office, financial aid office, career services, multicultural affairs and academic advisors.

School Selection Process:
The Director will have ongoing contact with schools that have been previously selected and develop new partnerships with other rural area high schools.
When contact has been established and schools have been selected for that semester, the guidance counselor would then give paperwork to the students (an application) and instruct them to do a one-page typed essay on "Why would you like to attend college?"
After review of applications and essays, a select number of students will be chosen from each participating high school. Invitations will be sent to the student's home address and names given to the guidance counselor.
