Admission to Auburn University’s Graduate School
Applying to the graduate program in Communication is a two-part process. The first part starts by applying for admission to The Graduate School. You may get information about The Graduate School by either writing to:
The Graduate School
Hargis Hall
Auburn University, AL 36849
(334) 844-4700
or by e-mailing: The Graduate School
You may apply online at The Graduate School's web page: The Graduate School.
Auburn University has a non-refundable application fee required with each application. CAUTION: The Graduate School does not process an application until the application fee is paid.
You will need to send two official transcripts of your undergraduate (and graduate, if applicable) work and your GRE scores to the Graduate School.
In addition, International applicants must also submit Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) scores.
Applications for admission to The Graduate School should be submitted as early as possible.
The second step of the application process is to submit a Purpose Statement to the Department, to have three letters of recommendation sent to us, and send us the completed Recommendations Review Waiver form. Normally to be considered for full admission by the Department of Communication and Journalism, the student must:
- have a minimum VGRE of 450, and a minimum QGRE of 450, and a minimum Writing GRE score of 4.5; and
- have an undergraduate GPA of at least 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale), and
- have three letters of recommendation (have the people writing the recommendations to send their letters directly to the Graduate Program Officer in the Department of Communication and Journalism) that attest to the student's ability to successfully complete a graduate program, and
- have submitted the completed Recommendations Review Waiver form, and
- have submitted a Statement of Purpose for enrolling in the graduate program of study. The Statement of Purpose should be a one page essay explaining why the applicant wants to pursue an advanced degree in Communication. The Statement of Purpose can be uploaded with the on-line Graduate School application or sent directly to Dr. Worthington via email or mail to her at her Tichenor Hall address (email submissions are preferred over regular postal mail).
NOTE: The Department does not admit students who have not taken the GRE. An application will not be considered complete until the applicant has reported official GRE scores. It is the student's responsibility to ensure that her/his application is complete. Feel free to contact Dr. Worthington if you want to check on the status of your application packet.
Application Deadlines for Admission
Fall Semester: July 15 of the same year (Note: Students who plan to also apply for Graduate Teaching Assistant positions should apply as early as possible).

CAUTION: An applicant's file must be COMPLETE by these deadlines. Applicants whose files are complete after a deadline will be considered for admission the following semester. Any application that remains incomplete after the entry semester begins will be removed from consideration.
