Welcome

Greetings from the Basement of the Haley Center:

Mary Helen Brown and Aubie Yes, the Department of Communication and Journalism has moved back to the Haley Center. This time instead of being on the sixth and eighth floors, we are in the basement. The move from Tichenor went remarkably smoothly considering the number of professors involved. We are an odd bunch, but have more or less settled now. Many of us can find our way back to our offices without having to shout, “Marco.” The space we now occupy can best be described as quirky. We’ve been told that we’ll be moving back to Tichenor sometime between next fall and the next twenty years. If you are on campus, please come by and visit us. The general consensus of visitors seems to be that the space is “not as bad as . . . expected.”

We have a lot going on in the department. First, the department continues to grow. We have been given permission to search for two positions this year: photojournalism and video production. Next year we’ll be adding a faculty position in New Technologies. Second, the department is being recognized nationally. For example, the department was recognized by PR Week for its work with blogging, podcasting, and videocasting. Also, the Tiger/Cub program was selected by the National Communication Association as a partner in its Communicating Common Ground program. Third, our students continue to be leaders on campus. A brief survey finds Plainsmen and War Eagle Girls; Camp War Eagle Counselors; Student Athletes, Plainman Editors; SGA Officers, Senators, and Cabinet Members; Cheerleaders; Circle Editors; Eagle Eye Producers and Managers; Circle Editors; and Miss Homecoming and Miss Auburn finalists to name a few. Fourth, rumor has it that three of our students/alumni have been winners on “Fear Factor.”

We’re glad you’ve chosen to visit our web site. Please take the time to explore it to learn more about our department, its people, and its programs. If you have any questions or need any other information, please feel free to contact us. If you’re ever on campus, please feel free to drop by. We love to meet new folks and renew old friendships.

War Eagle,

Mary Helen Brown
