Admissions Procedures
Incoming Freshmen and Transfers: When applying to Auburn University as an incoming freshman or a transfer student, you may request the Communication, Journalism, Public Relations, or Radio, TV, & Film (Mass Communication) major. A limited number of students are admitted through this process. Students who are not accepted as COMM, JRNL, PRCM, or RTVF majors are advised to request admission to Auburn University as undeclared majors in the College of Liberal Arts. Once departmental application criteria are met, a student may apply to the Department of Communication and Journalism for admission as a COMM, JRNL, PRCM, or RTVF major.
Current Auburn Students: Current Auburn students in any college or department may apply to the Department of Communication and Journalism for admission as a COMM, JRNL, PRCM, or RTVF major. To apply, a student must meet the following application criteria:
- 45 hours of college course work completed (transfer credits included), which
includes completion of the Auburn University core. - GPA of 2.3 or higher. Once admitted, students must maintain a 2.3 GPA to
enroll in any JRNL, PRCM, or RTVF courses and a 2.3 GPA to enroll in any 3000 or 4000 level COMM courses. - Each student should also complete the selected introductory course for the
proposed major before applying:- Communication or Radio, TV, & Film (Mass Communication):COMM 1000
- Journalism or Public Relations: JRNL 1100
Meeting these criteria means only that a student is eligible to complete an application. Admission is not guaranteed. Students will be admitted to each major on a space available basis. Space is carefully determined each semester based on standards for national accreditation and current departmental resources.
