The Student Scholarships and Awards Committee is happy to announce the following scholarships for 2010-2011. A description of each scholarship follows.

2010-2011 AU Scholarships in Department of Communication and Journalism:
The Cynthia Tucker ‘76 Endowed Scholarship for Underrepresented Groups. This is a $1,000 scholarship in honor of 2007 Pulitzer Prize in Journalism for Commentary recipient Cynthia Tucker. Scholarship started in 2007.
The scholarship is funded by a $100,000 endowment from The James M. Cox Foundation of Georgia. Tucker, a 1976 journalism graduate, was awarded the Pulitzer for her distinguished commentary and, according to the Pulitzer Prize judges “for her courageous, clear-headed columns that evince a strong sense of mortality and persuasive knowledge of the community.”
Tucker, a native of Monroeville, Ala., is a syndicated columnist and the editorial page editor for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
To be eligible for the scholarship, the applicant must:
*have and maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale
*be majoring in print journalism

The New York Times Foundation Scholarship for Minorities in Journalism. Scholarship program started in 2001.
Two scholarships in the amount of $2,500 each will be awarded to deserving students. To be eligible for the scholarship, the applicant must have and maintain a cumulative grade point average of 2.0, have completed at least 31 semester hours of college/university courses, and be seriously considering embarking on a career in print journalism.
Preference will be granted to underrepresented minority students. Download .doc
The Porter and Alice Harvey Advertiser-Gleam Journalism Scholarship. This scholarship, funded by the Sam Harvey family, is for full tuition for the academic year and is awarded annually. The recipient will be a current Auburn University or an incoming upperclass transfer student.
To be eligible for the scholarship, the applicant must have demonstrated academic excellence with an overall collegiate grade point average of 3.0, have completed at least 61 semester hours of college/university courses, and be seriously considering embarking on a career in print journalism.
The recipient must show a commitment to a career in print journalism that has been demonstrated through newspaper work at The Auburn Plainsman or elsewhere above and beyond course requirements. Download .doc
The Gannett Foundation/Montgomery Advertiser Endowed Scholarshipis is presented for academic excellence to a current Auburn University journalism major or incoming student who has been accepted for enrollment at Auburn as a journalism major.
Recipients will be eligible to reapply for the scholarship in subsequent years.
One scholarship of approximately $1,000 is awarded each year. Applicants must demonstrate academic excellence with a minimum collegiate grade point average of 3.0 or better. Preference is granted to underrepresented minority students. Download .doc
The Lynne Hopkins Memorial Scholarshiphonors Lynne Hopkins, 1984-1985 editor of The Auburn Plainsman, who died July 2, 1988.
Lynne Hopkins' parents, Paul and Judy Hopkins of Huntsville, were instrumental in the establishment and support of this scholarship to honor their daughter. The amount varies from about $350 to $500.
The recipient must be a full-time Auburn University student and journalism major. Normally, the scholarship is presented to a Plainsman staff member.
Requirements include a minimum collegiate grade point average of 3.0, at least sophomore standing, personal integrity, and a genuine interest in pursuing print journalism as a career. Download .doc
The Auburn Plainsman Scholarship was established in spring 2002 with an endowment from The Plainsman, Auburn University's student newspaper. Contributing Plainsman staff members, both in editorial and advertising-business offices, may apply.
Freshmen, sophomores or juniors are eligible. Up to four scholarships of approximately $1,000 each will be awarded each year, and number of scholarships and amount may vary according to the endowment.
The recipient must be a full-time Auburn University student. Applicants must have a minimum grade point average of 2.5. Download .doc
The Gene Vandiver Memorial Scholarship honors Gene Vandiver, who graduated from Auburn University in 1977.
Before his death in January 1980 at age 25, Vandiver had worked as sports editor and news editor of The Daily editor for The Shreveport Journal in Louisiana.
Vandiver, who was a student at Auburn from 1974 to 1977, won national honors as sports editor of The Auburn Plainsman. Shortly after his death, Gene Vandiver's classmates, friends and associates established The Gene Vandiver Memorial Scholarship in 1981.
The amount of this scholarship varies from $350 to $500.
The recipient must be a full-time Auburn University student and journalism major. Normally, the scholarship is presented to a Plainsman staff member.
Requirements include a minimum collegiate grade point average of 3.0, at least sophomore standing, personal integrity, and a genuine interest in pursuing print journalism as a career. Download .doc
The Mary Whitley Award honors Mary Whitley, 1965-1966 editor of The Auburn Plainsman.
Whitley died in an auto accident on Feb. 18, 1966. The amount of this scholarship varies from about $350 to $500. The recipient must be a full-time Auburn University student and journalism major.
Normally, the scholarship is presented to a Plainsman staff member. Requirements include a minimum collegiate grade point average of 3.0, at least junior standing, personal integrity, and a genuine interest in pursuing print journalism as a career. Download .doc
The Louise and Henry P. Johnston Scholarship. Annual scholarship of $500 established to benefit students in journalism and communications.
Scholarship is alternated each year between journalism and communications majors.
THE 20010-2011 SCHOLARSHIP WILL BE AWARDED TO A COMMUNICATION MAJOR.
Requirements include having completed at least 45 hours of course work and a grade point average of 2.8 or better.
Students should be seriously considering embarking on a career in some aspect of journalism or communications. Download .doc
Don Logan, Southern Progress Incorporated Endowed Scholarship. Southern Progress Corporation established this scholarship to honor Auburn alumnus Don Logan, chairman of AOL Time Warner’s media and communications group, and to recognize outstanding journalism students in the College of Liberal Arts.
One scholarship in the amount of $1,000 will be awarded to a journalism major. The recipient will be a full-time Auburn University student.
To be eligible for the scholarship, the student must have and maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 and be majoring in journalism. Financial need may be a consideration.

The James W. Woodruff Jr. Endowment Fund for Scholarships in Communication.
This endowment is established by the Board of Directors of the J.W. and E.I. Woodruff Foundation of Columbus, Ga., for the purpose of providing a scholarship for students in the Department of Communication and Journalism in honor of Mr. James W. Woodruff’s memory.
Like his father before him, James W. Woodruff Jr., was an innovator. His major contribution to the Chattahoochee River Valley was the introduction of television to Columbus, Ga., with his station WRBL-TV
.James W. Woodruff Jr. Scholars in Communication will have the opportunity to study radio, television and film production at a department with alumni ties to Time-Warner, the Showtime Network/Viacom, CBS, ABC and other companies.
The Woodruff Scholarship requires a 3.4 or higher GPA. First preference goes to RTVF majors from the Chattachoochee valley area, but all COMM, RTVF, or PRCM majors are encouraged to apply. The scholarship is for $1,000. Download .doc
Jack Simms Endowed Scholarship in Journalism, established in 2005 by the Journalism Advisory Board in honor of Auburn journalism founder and longtime journalism department head/professor Jack Simms for the purpose of providing scholarships for students in journalism in the College of Liberal Arts.
The scholarship was established by friends and former students of Jack Simms. Additional contributions to the scholarship fund by others are encouraged.
One scholarship in the amount of $1,000 will be awarded to a journalism major. The recipient will be a full-time Auburn University student.
To be eligible for the scholarship, the student must have and maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale and be majoring in journalism.
