Susan Brinson joined the department in 1990 and is Professor of mass communication. Her research and teaching interests focus on broadcasting history, media law, mass communication theory, and representations of gender/minorities in the mass media. She has authored two books (Personal and Public Interests: Frieda Hennock and the FCC, and The Red Scare, Politics, and the FCC) and co-edited Transmitting the Past with J. Emmett Winn. She is currently working on a history of the FCC's participation in national security, starting with World War II and continuing through the Cold War. She is the Editor of the Journal of Broadcasting & Electronic Media, and was recently appointed as an Alumni Professor at Auburn University. Brinson is active in the Broadcast Education Association.
