Degree Options
The Department of Communication Disorders offers courses of study leading to the Master of Science degree (thesis option) or the Master of Communication Disorders (non-thesis option) in Speech-Language Pathology, and the Doctor of Audiology (Au.D.) degree in Audiology.
For students pursuing the M.S. degree, an oral thesis defense/comprehensive examination is completed close to the end of the program. For students in the M.S. program, field experience is optional, depending on clinical clock hour needs. Students pursuing the M.C.D. degree sit for a written comprehensive examination and complete a required 15-week off campus field experience. An emphasis in speech-language pathology will be reflected in the student’s plan of study which, although flexible, is compatible with ASHA certification requirements.
For those pursuing the Au.D. degree, students complete a series of "Level" examinations to progress through the program, and a capstone project. The final two semesters consist of a required full-time off-campus field experience (clinical residency). The program is compatible with ASHA certification requirements.
Students completing the graduate program in speech-language pathology or the Doctor of Audiology program are eligible for certification by the Alabama State Board of Education and for licensure by the Alabama Board of Examiners in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology (ABESPA).
