About the Writing Center

English Center Logo

The Writing Center offers one-to-one tutoring in reading and writing for students enrolled in the following University-required core courses: Freshman Writing, World Literature, Introduction to Theatre, Physical Geology, Historical Geology, Global Geography, Introduction to Psychology, and Sociology: Global Perspective. Services for the rest of the University-required core courses will be phased in as soon as possible.

More specifically, the consultants in the Writing Center can help you get started writing by teaching you how to brainstorm for ideas. Consultants can help you learn to organize those ideas and to develop plans for your papers. Once you have a draft, consultants can answer your questions about how to revise your papers and even read drafts to see if they make sense. Consultants can also answer questions about sentence structure, punctuation, and documentation, and they are expert in library research.

Some of the Services Offered by the Writing Center:

  • Face-to-face tutoring in reading and writing. These personalized sessions are the most popular service offered by the Writing Center. The Writing Center offers tutoring in two locations—Haley Center 3183 and RBD Library, 2nd floor.
  • Routine appointments, perhaps with the same consultant. You can set up regularly scheduled appointments, so that you have priority for tutoring as many as three times per week. (Contact Dr. Thompson at thompis@auburn.edu.)
  • An on-line chat feature that allows you to work with a Writing Center consultant via the World Wide Web. (The Electronic Consultant is available on this website.)
  • A variety of handouts designed for Writing Center users and links to other on-line writing resources. (Available for downloading from this website.)
