MA Program Requirements
The first year in the MA program is essentially the same for thesis and non-thesis option students; by the end of the first year, though, you must decide which option to pursue so that you can effectively complete your requirements.
Basic Requirements for the Non-Thesis Option
- 30 hours of course work
- Reading knowledge of one foreign language
- Comprehensive examination (GRAD 7000, 0-credit hours, if not registered for coursework during exam semester) consisting of a six-hour written examination over four areas of the MA Reading List
Basic Requirements for the Thesis Option

- 24 hours of course work
- Thesis, usually not to exceed 50 pages (5-6 credit-hours)
- Reading knowledge of one foreign language
- Comprehensive examination (ENGL 7990, 1 credit-hour, if not registered for coursework during exam semester), consisting of
- A 4 1/2 hour written examination over three areas of the MA Reading List
- A one-hour oral examination over the completed thesis
Concentrations
Two specialized concentrations are available to interested and qualified students.
Concentration in Creative Writing (Thesis Option only):
- 24 hours of course work
- at least 6 and not more than 9 hours in creative writing courses
- At least 9 hours in literature courses
- Creative thesis, usually not to exceed 50 pages (5-6 credit-hours)
- Reading knowledge of one foreign language
- Comprehensive examination (ENGL 7990, 1 credit-hour, if not registered for coursework during exam semester), consisting of
- A 4 1/2 hour written examination over three areas of the MA Reading List
- A one-hour oral examination over the completed thesis
Concentration in Rhetoric and Composition (Thesis Option only):
- 24 hours of course work
- three core courses:
- ENGL 7040 English Composition: Approaches and Issues
- ENGL 7050 Studies in Composition
- ENGL 7300 Rhetoric: Theory and Practice
- At least three more English courses
- Two courses in a coordinated minor or two more English courses
- Thesis in the field of rhetoric and composition, usually not to exceed 50 pages (5-6 credit-hours)
- Reading knowledge of one foreign language
- Comprehensive examination (ENGL 7990, 1 credit-hour, if not registered for coursework during exam semester), consisting of
- A 4 1/2 hour written examination over the Rhetoric and Composition area and two other areas of the MA Reading List
- A one-hour oral examination over the completed thesis
