Basic Requirements for MTPC Students

  • Complete 30 semester hours of course work beyond the bachelor's degree. You may take these courses in any sequence.
  • Four required courses (12 hours):
      • ENGL 6000 Technical and Professional Editing (3 hrs.)
      • ENGL 6010 Document Design in Technical and Professional Communication (3 hrs.)
      • ENGL 6030 Topics in Technical and Professional Communication (3 hrs.)
      • ENGL 7010 Technical and Professional Communication: Issues and Approaches (3 hrs.)
    • Three elective courses in English (9 hours) approved by your advisory committee.
    • Three courses in a coordinated minor (9 hours) such as Communication; Computer Science and Engineering; Educational Foundations, Leadership, and Technology; Management; Management Information Systems; Psychology; or any of a number of other possibilities, depending on your qualifications and professional goals. You may, with the approval of your advisory committee, substitute additional courses in English for this requirement. If you are a first-year GTA working to fulfill the required 18 hours in the teaching discipline you should be aware that you can count only hours in English and a maximum of 3 credit hours (one course) in Communication as part of the required 18 hours.
    • Develop a portfolio of work acceptable to your advisory committee.
    • Pass a comprehensive examination covering the course work undertaken as part of your degree program. Your advisory committee serves as your examining committee.

The program has no language requirement.
