Prospective Students
I am pleased to learn of your interest in the master's degree program in technical and professional communication (MTPC) at Auburn University. Since 2002, our MTPC program has graduated more than 50 students, most of whom found jobs quickly and some of whom have moved from their first jobs to more prestigious and higher paying jobs. If you are interested in talking with some of our graduates, I will be pleased to introduce you by email or by phone.
The MTPC program requires 30 semester hours of course work. If you want to, you may take up to three of your ten required courses from other departments. If you decide to take all of your courses in English, you will have a wide range of relevant courses to select from, including additional courses in technical and professional communication, rhetoric and composition, and linguistics.
Further, it is important to note that you are not required to have an undergraduate degree in English or to be accepted into our program, and you will not be required to pass a foreign language or complete a thesis to graduate. Because they are working as graduate teaching assistants or at some other part-time job, most students need two academic years to complete the program, not counting summers.
Our faculty includes six full-time professors who specialize in technical and professional communication, as well as several others in the field of composition studies and rhetoric and the field of linguistics. Classes are small, and students and faculty get to know each other well.
The most common type of financial aid available for MTPC students is the graduate teaching assistantship. However, other jobs are also available at Auburn University, and some students choose jobs as editors, writers, or technology assistants while pursuing the MTPC full time or part time. Although the MTPC faculty and I are always looking for jobs for our students, we cannot promise that you will receive either a graduate teaching assistantship or another position on campus.
I will be happy to answer any questions you may have about the MTPC program, the application materials, and the application process. If you would like to visit the campus, please let me know. You may reach me most easily by email.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Best regards,
Dr. Isabelle Thompson, Professor, Technical and Professional Communication
