Requirements for the English Major
The English Major consists of 36 hours (normally twelve 3-hour courses), not counting any courses used to fulfill the University Core Curriculum. The major divides into three parts:
- The English Major Core of four required courses (12 hours).
The core curriculum for the English Major is intended to provide the student with a broad knowledge of the general topics covered within the specific concentrations. In order to fulfill the core requirements, a student must choose twelve hours of writing, linguistics and rhetoric, and advanced literature courses. The list of these classes follows:

- ENGL 3080 Business Writing
- ENGL 4000 Advanced Composition
- ENGL 4010 The Personal Essay
1 of these:
- ENGL 3110 Survey of Linguistics
- ENGL 5410 History of the English Language
- ENGL 4140 Language Variation
- ENGL 4150 Topics in Language Study
- ENGL 4160 Technology, Literacy, and Culture
- ENGL 4180 Rhetorical Theory and Practice
- ENGL 5840 Modern English Grammars
2 courses in American or British Literature or Literature in translation at the 4000-level or higher.
- Five courses at the 3000-level or higher.
- The student will also take three elective courses, at least one of which must be at the 3000-level or higher (9 hours). Also required but not counted as part of the 36 hours are 12 hours of supporting course work at the 2000-level or higher in a subject chosen by the student, approved by the student's advisor, and not counting courses used to fulfill the University Core Curriculum. Supporting coursework allows the student the flexibility to add courses in other departments to his or her major curriculum in order to meet one's own intellectual and career goals. These classes do not need to be taken in the same department.
Students must also demonstrate computer competency by taking COMP 1000 or by passing the computer competency test.
