The Linguistics & Rhetoric Concentration
Linguistics concerns the systematic study of sounds, structures, and meanings of language and the social dimensions of language use. Besides learning how language works in its major systems, students gain an understanding of language usage by various regional, ethnic, and social groups as well as the functions of language change. Students learn to appreciate the richness of different historical and cultural backgrounds as expressed through the medium of language.
Rhetoric is the art of speaking and writing effectively. It is a powerful means of persuasion and communication; a student of rhetoric will learn through studying literary theory, non-fiction prose, contemporary media, grammar, and teachings of the great rhetoricians of the past.
