Description of the Lab Facilities and Equipment

The Foreign Language Multimedia Center at Auburn University currently includes 4 rooms. The main Lab (Haley 3230) is equipped with 30 Dell GX280 desktop computers. Each computer has a CD-RW drive and a set of headphones for listening to audio exercises. The 17" flat panel monitors have two USB 2.0 ports on the left side for connecting USB flash drives. Students may use these computers to access web-based foreign language class materials such as streaming video and audio, as well as online collaboration software called Wimba. The room is staffed by student workers during regular business hours. A network printer is also supplied for use by computers in the lab at a price of $0.06 per sheet (charged to the student's Bursar's account).

The second room (Haley 3234) is the Student Study room. It is equipped with audio tape listening equipment (Sony ER-8020) in partitioned listening booths along with four TV/VCR combo units and a TV/DVD combo unit. Some assignments in our foreign language classes require students to record themselves answering questions in appropriate language. Audio cassette duplication equipment is also available. Haley 3234 also has five additional student computer stations as well as an instructor's station for on-duty Graduate Teaching Assistants and is equiped with a Visioneer Scanner. Round tables are available to students for studying at any time during the day.

The third room in the Multimedia Center is equipped as a Technology Enabled Classroom (Haley 3242). The room is equipped with 28 Dell GX280 desktop computers with 17" flat panel monitors which are stored inside the desk when not in use. The instructor's station in the classroom is also powered by a Dell GX280 desktop computer with DVD player as well as other audio/video equipment:

  • DVD player
  • VCR
  • Audio tape player. Instructors can record lectures using a lapel microphone
  • Overhead document viewer
  • Connections for a laptop
  • Overhead LCD projector

The fourth room in the Multimedia Center is the Video Lounge located in Haley 3244. This well furnished room is designed for group viewings of Foreign Language Films from our extensive library for class or leasure. The TV is equiped with a VCR as well as a multi-region DVD player for viewing non-region 3 (North America) DVDs. The lounge also has three TV/DVD combo units for personal viewing. The lounge is open during regular business hours.

During the past two years we have been converting all of our analog materials into digital format. All digitizing is done inhouse, using modern equipment and software. The centerpiece of our digitizing equipment is a Dell Precision 530 Dual Xeon 2.0 Ghz Workstation with 1 Gig of RAM. The equipment connected to this computer includes the following:

  • Dell DVD-Rom
  • Dell CDRW/CDR/CD-Rom
  • Sony DVMC-DA2 Media Converter
  • Optimus SCT-86 Stereo Tape Deck
  • Panasonic AG-W1 International VCR

All digitized audio and video files are stored on a local Windows Media server. We digitize audio tapes using both Windows Media Encoder and Sound Forge. Video files are digitized using both Adobe Premier and Windows Media Encoder to a finished product of a Media Video (.wmv) format in variable bit rate.

We have two Samsung SV-7000 W multistandard VCRs for converting video tapes from any world standard into any other standard.

The newest addition to our multimedia equipment is an Olympus D-520zoom Digital Camera. The camera has been wonderful for taking snapshots at deparmental meetings and training seminars.

Also included in the Multimedia Center is our very own . VHS tapes, CDs, DVDs, and other equipment are available for checkout by the staff of Auburn University (view the checkout policies).
