The Quilts of Gees Bend in Context Interdisciplinary Project came into being in anticipation of the arrival of "The Quilts of Gees Bend" exhibit at the Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art on the Auburn Campus in Fall 2005. The project represents the work of more than a dozen scholars from different fields as well as IT staff at Auburn University working together since the fall of 2002. Originating in the Women’s Studies Program, this three-part project comprises: research into the quilts (begun in Summer 2003); development of web-based teaching materials for schools and colleges (pilot program, Summer 2004; the larger project, for Summer 2005, is planned); and dissemination (beginning in Fall 2005 when the quilts are on our campus at the JCS Museum).
