LOCATION: Shanghai, China

Shanghai is a most dynamic destination that can offer students an unparalleled first-hand experience of the rapid and unique development China is currently undergoing. Located on the southeast coast of the country, Shanghai is the country’s major financial, commercial, industrial, and cultural center, and is also one of the largest cities in the world. The city’s present development owes much to China’s extensive interactions as a trading port with foreign countries including Britain, Germany, France, Japan, and the U.S. since the mid nineteenth century. The former International Settlements and the Bund lining the western bank of the Huangpu River showcase historic buildings of various architectural styles from the 1930s, including Art Deco, Romanesque, Neo-Classical, and Gothic, and are now one of the favorite tourist destinations in China. Located at the crossroad between east and west, the city also prides itself on a rich intellectual, literary, and artistic heritage. City tours that the program arranges will introduce students to the living heritage of the city and China, while students will enjoy truly diverse on-going cultural and entertainment scenes all around the city. As part of cultural activities integral to this program, students will also visit historic sites within the city, as well as Hangzhou and Suzhou, cities that offer rich cultural, literary, and architectural heritage, and whose most picturesque landscape has for centuries attracted renowned poets and artists.  The host institution, East China Normal University, ranks among some of the most highly regarded academic institutions in China. Apart from being well-known for its prestigious programs in Chinese literature and history, finance, business, and engineering, ECNU is also particularly acclaimed for its excellence in teaching Chinese language to foreign students. Known as “Garden University,” the downtown campus where students will be studying is set against a beautiful green landscaping with a tree-lined canal, and it will provide students with great facilities for dining, sports, and cultural activities on and off-campus. In Shanghai, students can take advantage of the inexpensive and well-developed public transportation system (subway, light rail, and bus), and will have ready access to almost every major city in China by train or flight.
