Italy Semester Program in TaorminaOBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMThe academic program is designed to accommodate the needs, interests, and proficiency level of each individual learner. Students will receive 12 semester credit hours choosing from all levels of language and many exciting courses such as Geology, Art, History, Music, Literature, and Culture. The Auburn Program Director will assist with course selection and credit transfer. Please note that course availability is subject to sufficient enrollment and for some of the courses, students are required to take a placement exam upon arrival. A key component to the program is direct contact with the language and culture. Classes meet Monday through Friday mornings so as to allow ample time for travel and experiencing the local culture. Students are in class with peers from several international colleges and universities for a maximum of 10 students per class. In addition to classroom instruction, students, in fact, will attend lectures by experts in the field, view films, and visit the surrounding areas. Some social activities in Italian are also included. LIVING ARRANGEMENTS/ HOUSINGStudents will experience a full-immersion home-stay with an approved host family. This enriching, unforgettable opportunity extends the learning experience beyond the classroom walls. Students often remark that the home-stay is the most rewarding part of their semester abroad. The Housing Coordinator at Taormina works with the Auburn Program Director in finding a suitable living environment for all participants. Board includes 2 meals a day, breakfast and dinner, and a single room. Rights and responsibilities to be explained fully at orientation. |
Daniel NeSmith, Italian Studies Minor 2007 Thanks to the training I received from the Italian teaching staff at Auburn, especially Dr. Summerfield, I had a solid grammatical language base and a strong knowledge of Italian culture and lifestyle when I arrived for follow-on language studies at the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, CA. As a Naval Officer stationed in Sicily, my foreign language skills are useful when working with the Italian Military and communicating with other Italians while I'm out exploring the country's history. However, being able to talk with my Sardinian wife, her family, and my children in Italian is the most gratifying part about learning the language. Cari saluti!
