Italy Semester Program in Taormina

OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAM

The academic program is designed to accommodate the needs, interests, and proficiency level of each individual learner. Students will receive 12 semester credit hours choosing from all levels of language and many exciting courses such as Geology, Art, History, Music, Literature, and Culture. The Auburn Program Director will assist with course selection and credit transfer. Please note that course availability is subject to sufficient enrollment and for some of the courses, students are required to take a placement exam upon arrival. A key component to the program is direct contact with the language and culture. Classes meet Monday through Friday mornings so as to allow ample time for travel and experiencing the local culture. Students are in class with peers from several international colleges and universities for a maximum of 10 students per class. In addition to classroom instruction, students, in fact, will attend lectures by experts in the field, view films, and visit the surrounding areas. Some social activities in Italian are also included.

LIVING ARRANGEMENTS/ HOUSING

Students will experience a full-immersion home-stay with an approved host family. This enriching, unforgettable opportunity extends the learning experience beyond the classroom walls. Students often remark that the home-stay is the most rewarding part of their semester abroad. The Housing Coordinator at Taormina works with the Auburn Program Director in finding a suitable living environment for all participants. Board includes 2 meals a day, breakfast and dinner, and a single room. Rights and responsibilities to be explained fully at orientation.

Katherine Bowling, a Minor in Italian Studies In high school, I did not have the opportunity to study Italian. When I came to college, I jumped at the chance to take the Italian language courses offered at the school. Choosing this minor gave me the chance to learn from my teacher, classmates, and fellow citizens of the world. The Italian language will be useful if I become involved in international diplomacy as a career, or if I simply wanted to enjoy an enhanced reading experience as an adult. Study abroad opened my mind up to new perspectives, and I am forever grateful for the opportunity. I feel confident that were it not for my experiences in my Italian Studies curriculum, I would not have discovered many things about myself and those around me.
