Auburn University is offering an intensive academic language program in Salamanca, Spain, for undergraduate and graduate students as well as teachers of Spanish.
Salamanca, situated 120 miles to the west of Madrid, has a population of 170,000 residents. It is the proud home of the oldest university in Spain, (it was founded in 1230), and is well known throughout Europe and South America as the "heart and soul" of Spanish university life. Salamanca's rich history is reflected in its monuments, from the Roman-built bridge across the Tormes river, or the splendid Plateresque façades and patios of the University's Colegios Mayores y Menores, to the intriguing Casa de las Conchas, and the justly famous Plaza Mayor, considered to be one of the finest main squares in Europe. Built at the beginning of the 18th century, the Plaza Mayor was designed to hold up to 20,000 spectators for traditional bullfights. Today the Plaza Mayor is the social hub of the city, and all through the day and long into the night people, both young and old, stroll under the arcades or sit at one of the numerous outdoor cafés.
