Spain Summer Program in SalamancaOBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMThe specific objective of the program is to provide students and teachers of Spanish with a most conducive environment for the intensive study of the language and culture of Spain. In order to increase linguistic competence, enhance understanding of the cultural dimensions of language, and encourage interaction with Spanish culture, the participant will be placed in a total immersion program according to his/her previous study of Spanish. Since the primary objective of the program is full cultural immersion, each participant will be expected to communicate in Spanish at all times. PROGRAMUpon arrival in Salamanca, students will be given a walking tour and an orientation before classes begin. Classes run from 9:00 AM to 12:15 PM, and from 4:00 PM to 7:15 PM. Undergraduate language, culture, and literature courses will be taught at Colegio Universitario Marista. Graduate literature, pedagogy, and linguistics courses will be taught by guest professors from both American and Spanish universities at the Colegio de España. PROGRAM OPTION 1 : INTENSIVE UNDERGRADUATE LANGUAGE AND CULTURE (Cost: $5,250)
PROGRAM OPTION 2 : GRADUATE LITERATURE, LANGUAGE AND CULTURE (Cost: $ 5,250)Students may earn up to 6 semester hours of graduate credit in Spanish. Students normally take two courses and attend 90% of the classes to receive credit. The option includes the same excursions and cultural activities mentioned in Option 1, excluding the initial stay in Madrid. Classes are in the Colegio de España. LIVING ARRANGEMENTS/HOUSINGStudents will stay in a Colegio Universitario or similar dorm in Salamanca. Board includes 3 meals a day. |
After four months in Spain I realized that I could speak Spanish and that all my hard work over the years had paid off in a concrete way. I feel that each of the students that went for the study abroad came away with a stronger sense of their own culture as well as a sense and understanding of the Spanish culture.
