Stephen Barber

Stephen P. Barber is a PhD candidate working under the direction of Dr. Charles Israel. His dissertation-in-progress is a study of the religious culture of the Chattahoochee Valley from the time of settlement until the end of Reconstruction, with an emphasis on the experiences and actions of African Americans.

Barber graduated summa cum laude from Columbus State University in 2001 and received his MA from Auburn University in 2007. He majored in Early American History under Drs. Anthony Carey and Kathryn Braund, with minor fields in Modern American History under Dr. Larry Gerber and African American History under Dr. David Carter. His paper, "Canaan in Georgia: The African Methodist Episcopal Church in Georgia, 1865-1868," presented at the Graduate History Forum at UNC-Charlotte on March 18, 2006, won the prize for "Best Overall Submission."

Barber is currently an Assistant Professor of History at the Columbus campus of Georgia Military College, where he also serves as the Social and Behavioral Science Coordinator.
