Valerie Pope Burnes

Valerie Pope Burnes is completing her dissertation on the Civil Rights Movement in Perry and Hale Counties under the direction of Dr. David Carter. After serving as Assistant Professor of history for two years at Judson College, where she taught upper level history courses, as well as Women in Society, Valerie and her husband Brian moved to Livingston, Alabama. Valerie is Director of the Center for the Study of the Black Belt at the University of West Alabama. The mission of the Center is to foster greater appreciation and understanding of Alabama’s Black Belt culture. She is also employed in a tenure track position in the History department.
