Matt Malczycki

Dr. Malczycki earned his BA (History, 1997) from the University of Arkansas and his MA (Middle East Studies, 2001) and PhD (History 2006) from the University of Utah. Before joining the Department of History at AU, he worked as an assistant professor in the Department of Arab and Islamic Civilizations at the American University in Cairo (AUC) from 2005-8.

His research area is Arabic papyrology, which is the study of the oldest extant Arabic primary source documents. Most of his current research centers on religious texts such as fragments of the Quran and parts of hadith works. His current courses at AU are HIST 1010 (World History I), HIST 2130 (Survey of Middle East History), HIST 3970 Intro to Islamic History, and HIST 3970 (Crusade and Jihad in History). He will introduce new Middle East and Islam-related courses in the future.
