Instructions for Application to the Graduate Program in History, Auburn University
DEADLINES: Applications must be
received (and complete) by February 15 to be considered for an assistantship.
If the applicant does not wish to be considered for an assistantship, materials
will be accepted as late as April 15.
How to Apply: The application
process involves two steps (steps 1 and 2). Some materials must be sent directly to the Graduate
School, and some materials must be sent directly as a complete packet to
the History Department. Please find below a check list of the various items
requested by the Graduate School and the History Department respectively.
Application Materials:
STEP 1.
Send the following items directly to the Graduate School, Hargis Hall, (334) 844-4700:

Official copy of GRE scores (verbal and quantitative).

Official copies of all undergraduate and graduate transcripts.

Graduate School application form, which is available on-line.

Check for the processing fee.
STEP 2.
Send the following items directly to Dr. David Carter, as a complete packet of materials (everything should be included in one envelope to arrive together):

Photocopy of GRE scores (for departmental use only; this does not need to be an official copy).

Three letters of recommendation (to be placed in sealed envelopes with the professors' signatures across the seals and to be mailed with the packet of materials by the applicant himself/herself).

A writing sample (for instance, a paper that you have written for a course in your previous academic program).

A statement of purpose: in not more than 1,000 words, please write a description of your academic interests. Clearly state your special area of interest and the particular historical problems, theories, movements, etc. upon which you would like to see your graduate study focus. Please be certain to mention the ways in which you would like to address these questions in reference to one of the following major fields: U.S. to 1865, U.S. since 1865, Early Modern Europe, Modern Europe, History of Technology. If training for a position as an archivist is also one of your goals, please indicate it in your statement.
