Audition Requirements for Vocalists
Vocal Auditions ARE NOT required for Music Education Majors who are not seeking a voice scholarship. However, vocal auditions ARE required for Music Education Majors who wish to apply for a voice scholarship.
Vocal Auditions ARE required for students wishing to pursue the Bachelor of Arts degree and those wishing to apply for a voice scholarship. The audition requirements are the same for both pursuits.
Students who indicate an “Undecided” major will not be eligible to audition for those scholarships that are specific to Music Education and Bachelor of Arts Majors. One MUST be a major to audition for music scholarships. (Students who are “undecided” should apply one of the independent scholarships such as the Tamblyn Scholarship which is for any major.)
By the audition date, only those students who have applied to the University and been accepted will be given serious consideration for a scholarship.
AUDITION REQUIREMENTS
Students should prepare two songs of the classical music tradition (i.e., Italian, French, German or English art song and/or aria), one of which should be in English. A song from standard musical theater repertoire may be substituted for one of the songs of the classical music tradition. Popular songs (e.g., country, gospel, contemporary Christian, praise and worship, rhythm and blues, urban, pop, jazz, and such like) are not acceptable.
The audition may include sight singing and a brief, general information interview (no advance preparation needed for the interview) in addition to the performance of the prepared songs. You may use CD or taped accompaniment. Please note that the department DOES NOT provide piano accompanists. However, you may bring your own if you desire to do so.
The attire should be professional. See below.
Men should wear a suit, or dress pants (no Khaki pants) w/dress shirt and tie, or dress pants w/shirt and blazer, dress socks and shoes. (Casual loafers or sneakers, as well as hats are not permitted)
Women should wear a dress, pant suit, or skirt and top (no mini-skirts or tight-fitting tops or skirts), pantihose, and heels (no sneakers, flip-flops or casual sandals).
Auditions will be held in Goodwin Recital Hall (unless indicated otherwise), located on the first floor of Goodwin Music Building on Samford Avenue.
