Percussion Ensemble
The Auburn Percussion Ensemble is a highly select group of music majors and minors who are currently studying applied percussion.  Others wishing to participate may do so by successfully passing an entrance audition.  The ensemble performs a wide variety of traditional and contemporary percussion ensemble literature, as well as transcriptions of pop and jazz pieces.  Works performed on recent concerts include:

  • Omphalo Centric Lecture – Nigel Westlake
  • Stained Glass – David Gillingham
  • New Resolutions – Jean Luc Ponty
  • Gainsborough – Thomas Gauger
  • The Doomsday Machine – Michael Burritt
  • Reverie – Claude Debussy, Arr. Dwayne Rice
  • Toccata for Percussion Instruments – Carlos Chavez
  • Phase Dance – Pat Metheney

Steel Band
This entertaining group performs a variety of music, with particular emphasis on calypso, soca, reggae, bossa nova, and pop. Membership in the Auburn Steel Band is open to anyone with prior musical experience, with the approval of the instructor.  No prior steel band experience is required. Rehearsals are held on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday evenings from 5-6 in the Band Hall of Goodwin Music Building.

The current instrumentation for the Auburn Steel Band is as follows:

  • 2 leads
  • 2 double seconds
  • guitar
  • cello
  • 2 six bass
  • Drum set
  • 2-3 percussion

The Steel Band is extremely popular and maintains a busy performing schedule during the fall and spring semesters, continuing with a volunteer group over the summer.  The ensemble performs concerts in conjunction with the percussion ensemble, as well as many separate, professional engagements.
