Guidelines for the Music Minor
(January 11, 2001)
APPLICATION PROCEDURE
The prospective student must obtain a Curriculum for the Music Minor form from the Music Office or from the prospective Applied Instructor.
The student then takes the completed form to the applied instructor at the time of the audition.
If the student passes the audition, the Applied Instructor signs the completed form and either the student or the Applied Instructor takes the form to the Music Office in order to establish a departmental file on the student.
If the student is not successful in the audition, the Applied Instructor will inform the student and explain their options.
BEGINNING THE MUSIC STUDY
A student who has been accepted as a music minor cannot take applied lessons unless they have taken or are currently enrolled in one or more academic music courses required for the Music Minor.
Any exception to the above policy will need to be discussed and approved by both the Applied Instructor and the Department Chair.
If the Applied Instructor has a full load of applied students after first accepting the music education majors, the student wishing to enroll as a music minor will need to be placed on the instructor's waiting list until an opening occurs or an additional faculty member is provided.
JURY, CONVOCATION, AND RECITAL REQUIREMENTS
Each music minor is required to perform for jury during each semester in which the student is enrolled in applied music study. Failure to meet this requirement will result in a grade of "IN" for the current applied music course. If the "IN" is not made up during the next semester, the grade will then become an "F."
Each student is encouraged to perform on Departmental Convocation during each semester in which the student is enrolled in applied music study. The student is required to perform on Departmental Convocation at least once per two semesters of applied study. Failure to meet this requirement will result in a grade of "IN" for the current applied music course. If the "IN" is not made up during the next semester, the grade will then become an "F."
A thirty minute recital for the music minor is encouraged but not required. Whether or not to give a recital will be a decision made jointly between the student and the Applied Instructor.
GRADES
The Music Minor will be granted only if the student has a minimum GPA of 2.0 in the required courses for the Music Minor.
