The Auburn University Department of Music is pleased to announce

competitive auditions for the

John William Tamblyn

Endowed Scholarship.

Purpose:
This Endowment is established for the purpose of providing scholarships for outstanding students. This endowment is created within The Auburn Foundation through initial gifts from alumni, friends, students and family members.

Dr. John William Tamblyn's love of music has made a profound difference in his life and the lives of Auburn University students and Auburn community members. An Auburn native, Dr. Tamblyn took his first piano lesson at age five; at 13 he played the organ at First Presbyterian Church; as a high school student he also played in a small dance band. Dr. Tamblyn earned two bachelor's degrees from Auburn, one in chemistry and another in music (one of the first offered by the department). he conducted his master's and doctoral work at Eastman School of Music.

For more than 30 years, Dr. Tamblyn served the University community by sharing his love for music -- as esteemed faculty member in the Department of Music and well-loved choir director and organist for Auburn's first Presbyterian Church. He holds emeritus status at both University and Church. In May 1990, he retired due to medical reasons, and though his pace is limited, his zest for life, passion for music and desire to contribute burn as brightly as ever. In recent years he has taught various music classes for Auburn University Academy of Lifelong Learners.
