Degree Requirements
The Philosophy Major is available with either a Philosophy Option or a Religious Studies Option. The requirements for the Philosophy Option have changes recently. Those who declared this as their major before Fall 2006 are covered by the old requirements.
Any 3000- and 4000-level PHIL class now carry prerequisites. All 3000-level classes require prior completion of 3 hours at the 1000- level. All 4000-level classes require prior completion of 6 hours a the 3000-level.

Philosophy Major:
- The new requirements for majors (Philosophy Option)
- Applies to anyone who has declared beginning Fall 2006.
- 33 Hours in accordance with two requirements:
- Area Distribution Requirement. Majors must complete 21 hours at the
3000- or 4000-level as follows:- Area I: 6 hours in Ethics & Value Theory
- Area II: 6 hours in Metaphysic & Epistemology
- Area III: 6 hours in History of Philosophy. Must be PHIL 3330 Ancient Philosophy and PHIL 3340 Modern Philosophy.
- Area IV: 3 hours in Logic. Must be PHIL 3110 Symbolic Logic
- Remaining 12 hours may be from any Area.
- Level Distribution Requirement
- At least 6 hours must be taken at the 4000-level
- Remaining 27 hours can be taken at either the 3000- or 4000-level
- Notes:
- All 3000- and 4000-level PHIL class now carry prerequisites. All 3000-level classes require prior completion of 3 hours at the 1000- level. All 4000-level classes require prior completion of 6 hours a the 3000-level.
- While no 1000-level PHIL classes count towards completion of the major, one still must take a 1000-level PHIL class to satisfy one's University Core Requirement, and to meet the prerequisite for any upper-division PHIL class.

- 3 hours 1000-level Logic or Ethics, whichever was not taken to satisfy the university core
- 9 hours 3000-level History of Philosophy (must be PHIL 3330 Ancient and Early Medieval, PHIL 3340 Late Medieval and Early Modern, PHIL 3350 Recent and Contemporary)
- 21 hours of electives, of which 6 hours must be at the 4000-level.
- The Philosophy Major (Religious Studies Option).
- 33 hours as follows
- 3 hours 1000-level Logic or Ethics, whichever was not taken to satisfy the university core
- 9 hours 3000-level History of Philosophy (must be PHIL 3330 Ancient and Early Medieval, PHIL 3340 Late Medieval and Early Modern, PHIL 3350 Recent and Contemporary)
- RELG 2010 Introduction to Religious Studies OR RELG 3300 Philosophy of Religion
- RELG 3330 Eastern Religions OR RELG 3340 Western Religions
- PHIL 3400 Medieval Philosophy OR PHIL 3740 Existentialism
- 9 additional hours of RELG courses at or above the 3000-level. HIST 3040 American Religious History and ENGL 3360 The Bible for Students of Literature may be approved by the area advisor for 6 of these 9 hours.
