Requirements for Major in Political Science

The major requires at least 36 semester-hours of Political Science courses, not counting POLI 1020(7) or POLI 1090(7). Students must take at least one course in Political Science at the 4000 level or higher (excluding internship, reading, or independent studey courses).

  1. POLI 1090 American Government in a Multi-Cultural World (3) (Since this course fulfills the University Core Social Science II requirement, it cannot be double-counted toward the 36 hours needed for the major.)

  2. POLI 3000 Political Science Research Methods (3)
  3. One course in Political Thought (3)

  4. At least one course in three of the following concentrations:

  5. At least three additional courses in one of the following concentrations.

    Note: Reading courses and internship courses may count toward the total hours for the major but they do not count toward the concentration requirements outlined above without special advance approval from the department.

  6. All political science majors must develop oral communication skills by choosing one of the following options:

    1. Take COMM 1000 Professional Communication,

      or...

    2. Take one of the following political science courses that require major oral presentations. (Selection of this option does not increase the number of hours required for the political science major; a course used for this option may count toward concentration requirements):

      • POLI 4010 Constitutional Law: Governmental Powers
      • POLI 4020 Constitutional Law: Civil Liberties
      • POLI 4030 Constitutional Law: Civil Rights
      • POLI 4340 Theory and Practice of Mediation
      • POLI 4610 Women and Politics
  7. Besides required courses and courses in a concentration a student will take enough additional political science courses in (any area of the discipline) to total 36 hours.
