Funding/Program Costs:
First-year doctoral students typically are supported through graduate teaching assistantships (GTAs). After the first year, clinical students receive funding through a clinical placement, although they may also pursue GTA positions if deemed appropriate. The program also offers RA positions, depending on available funds. Students who hold assistantships of at least .25 FTE (the norm in this department is .33 FTE) during a given semester receive a tuition fellowship from the university for that semester. This fellowship pays both in-state and out-of-state tuition for up to 15 semester credit hours for that semester. The student is required only to pay a matriculation fee for the semester of about $295. There is a limit to the number of credit hours of tuition fellowship a student can receive. Doctoral students in Clinical Psychology receive 107 semester hours. Students who continue to hold assistantships after exhausting the tuition fellowship limit will continue to have the out-of-state portion of tuition waived ($6240) during semesters in which they hold an assistantship but will be required to pay the in-state portion of their tuition ($3120). Historically, doctoral students making strong progress have received 5 years of support. Because levels of funding are determined by annual legislative action and by the budgetary constraints of the various practicum sites, it is impossible to guarantee this level of support, but it is expected to continue. Assistantship salaries start at $1050 per month (1/3 time, first-year student, no MS). Raises typically occur as students progress through the program. All doctoral students are automatically considered for assistantships; there is no separate application. For student loan info, contact the Financial Aid Office at 334-844-4723.
Attrition Statistics:
In the past seven years, (academic years 2001-2002 through 2007-2008), 52 students have matriculated in the Clinical Psychology Ph.D. program. Ten of those students have left the program without earning the Ph.D. That represents an attrition rate of 19%. The reasons for leaving the program vary, including a change in interests, moving to a new location, following a significant other, personal or family medical problems, and failing to meet the academic requirements of the program. Below are the attrition data by year of admission:
| Year of Enrollment | # Enrolled | # Graduated with Doctorate | # still currently enrolled | # No longer Enrolled |
| 2002 | 8 | 6 | 1 | 1 |
| 2003 | 9 | 5 | 2 | 2 |
| 2004 | 7 | 0 | 7 | 0 |
| 2005 | 6 | 0 | 3 | 3 |
| 2006 | 5 | 0 | 3 | 2 |
| 2007 | 9 | 0 | 8 | 1 |
| 2008 | 8 | 0 | 7 | 1 |
| Total | 52 | 11 | 31 | 10 |
Licensure Statistics:
Of the 68 graduates from 1997 to 2005, 62 or 91% are currently licensed as psychologists.
