Local Living Conditions
Auburn is a pleasant town on the eastern edge of Alabama. The Auburn-Opelika metropolitan area (population 90,000 +) is experiencing steady economic and population growth. Auburn has a progressive city government, excellent public schools and medical facilities, and many cultural and recreational attractions. Cities within an hour’s drive include Montgomery and Columbus (GA).
The Atlanta airport is only 90 minutes away. For outdoor enthusiasts, the Gulf Coast and mountains are only a few hours away, as are opportunities for rafting, hiking, skiing, camping, and rock-climbing.
The weather is pleasant. Most housing exists in the form of apartments and house rentals. The cost of living is lower than most areas east of the Mississippi. For more about on- and off-campus housing, contact the Student Housing Office (334-844-4580).
The university, the largest in the state, has about 23,000 students, of which about 4,000 are graduate students.

Although the Tigers may be the most widely recognized Auburn icon, and tailgaiting is legendary, football is not the only game in town. The university offers a wide array of recreational activities, including theater, music, athletics other than football, intramural sports, and public speakers and forums.
