2010 SCHOLARSHIP & MUSIC THEATRE PROGRAM AUDITIONS

Auburn University Theatre Auditions/Open House

When: Saturday, January 30, 2010 beginning at 10:00am.

Where: Telfair Peet Theatre; Samford Ave. at Duncan Drive, Auburn, AL.

AU Theatre Music Theatre Degree Program Audition Requirements

Singing/Acting Audition: Candidates must prepare a one-minute monologue from a contemporary or classic play (monologues from feature films are not allowed) and a contrasting one-minute song from established music theatre repertoire. Candidates are advised to select audition material that demonstrates range and variety in age appropriate roles. Auditors will want to get a sense of who you are as a person in addition to how well you can act and sing.

An accompanist will be provided, but candidates should come prepared with a CD of their accompaniment in case of an emergency with the AU accompanist. Candidates may also provide their own accompanist if necessary. Music should be placed in a binder or attached to card stock for the benefit of the accompanist. Students may not audition a capella for this program. All material must be memorized.

Dance Call: Candidates should be prepared to participate in a dance warm up (floor work, center work, travel pattern work, etc.) and to learn and perform a dance combination typical of a Broadway musical. Candidates should try to focus on mastering the combination quickly and accurately, but are well advised to perform the combination with great commitment regardless of mastery. Enthusiasm can occasionally compensate for lack of specific training.

Attire: For the dance call, candidates should dress in basic dancewear or rehearsal attire — clothes which allow for ease of movement. Women should wear character shoes, jazz shoes or ballet slippers, leotards, tights, dance skirts or non-bulky warm-up wear. Men should wear jazz or ballet shoes, tights, jazz pants, t-shirts or shorts. No bulky or oversized sweat-pants or sweatshirts are permitted and sneakers are not recommended. Candidates will have time to change between the dance call and the acting/singing auditions (see link to schedule below).

Award amount based on merit and scholarship awards are open to high school seniors and college transfer students who intend to major in Theatre and have maintained a 3.0 grade point average in their high school or previous college academic work.

AU Theatre Scholarship Audition Requirements

If you are auditioning for the music theatre degree program in January, that audition will constitute your scholarship audition as well. Students with an interest in performance who are not auditioning for the music theatre program may prepare two contrasting one-minute monologues from contemporary or classic dramatic literature (monologues from feature films are not allowed), or a one-minute monologue from a contemporary or classic play and a contrasting one-minute song from established music theatre repertoire. Candidates are advised to select audition material that demonstrates range and variety in age appropriate roles. Auditors will want to get a sense of who you are as a person in addition to how well you can act.

Candidates interested in design, technical production, management or dramaturgy areas will have five minutes to present their work. Portfolios, prompt books, and other appropriate supporting materials should be part of this presentation.

All students are encouraged to bring resumes and photos for the auditions and presentations and each candidate should be prepared to answer questions that may be posed by the auditors.
